Abstract:We study the impact of one light sterile neutrino on the prospective data expected to come from the two presently running long-baseline experiments T2K and NOνA when they will accumulate their full planned exposure. Introducing for the first time, the bi-probability representation in the 4-flavor framework, commonly used in the 3-flavor scenario, we present a detailed discussion of the behavior of the ν µ → ν e andν µ →ν e transition probabilities in the 3+1 scheme. We also perform a detailed sensitivity study of these two experiments (both in the stand-alone and combined modes) to assess their discovery reach in the presence of a light sterile neutrino. For realistic benchmark values of the mass-mixing parameters (as inferred from the existing global short-baseline fits), we find that the performance of both these experiments in claiming the discovery of the CP-violation induced by the standard CP-phase δ 13 ≡ δ, and the neutrino mass hierarchy get substantially deteriorated. The exact loss of sensitivity depends on the value of the unknown CP-phase δ 14 . Finally, we estimate the discovery potential of total CP-violation (i.e., induced simultaneously by the two CP-phases δ 13 and δ 14 ), and the capability of the two experiments of reconstructing the true values of such CP-phases. The typical (1σ level) uncertainties on the reconstructed phases are approximately 40 0 for δ 13 and 50 0 for δ 14 .

Abstract. Muon radiography is a method of study the internal structure of large natural and industrial objects based on sensing an object with a flux of cosmic muons with their subsequent registration and analysis of the pattern of their dispersion, or conplete (or partial) absorption.The Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics of Moscow State University have started a series of muon radiography experiments with nuclear emulsion detectors. As a result, the optimal conditions for experiment arrangement have been determined, algorithms of data processing have been worked out, and peculiarities of the method have been ultimately investigated.

The OPERA experiment reached its main goal by proving the appearance of tau-neutrinos in the CNGS muon-neutrino beam. A total sample of 5 candidates fulfilling the analysis defined in the proposal was detected with a S/B ratio of about ten allowing to reject the null hypothesis with a significance of 5.1 σ . The search was extended to ν τ -like interactions failing the kinematical analysis defined in the experiment proposal, to obtain a statistically enhanced, lower purity, signal sample. One such interesting neutrino interaction showing a double vertex topology with a high probability of being a tau-neutrino interaction with charm production will be reported. Based on the enlarged data sample the estimation of ∆m 2 23 in appearance mode will be presented and updated. The search for electron-neutrino interactions was extended over the full data set with a more than twofold increase in statistics with respect to published data. The analysis of the ν µ → ν e channel is updated and the implications of the electron-neutrino sample in the framework of the 3+1 sterile model is discussed. An analysis of the ν µ → ν τ oscillations in the framework of the sterile neutrino model was also performed. Finally, the analysis of the annual modulation of atmospheric muons will be discussed.
