Search Workshop on Large-Scale Atmosphere–Cryosphere Observations

Abstract: in instrumentation or satellites. In short, there has been no program like SEARCH to promote and support basin-wide, continuous long-term, multidisciplinary data sets in the Arctic.A second workshop conclusion is that present data sets are vastly underutilized in understanding Arctic change. Barriers include lack of conceptual models for conducting interdisciplinary analyses, data accessibility, various data formats, spatial inhomogeneity, and lack of easily applied tools for visualization and analysis of mult… Show more

“…Ecosystem effects due to a rapidly changing arctic climate are not easily predicted but are becoming more prevalent (Chapin et al, 1992;IPCC, 2001;Comiso, 2002;Overland et al, 2002). Over the past 35 years, the NAM has had an overall trend toward its high-index polarity (Wallace & Thompson, 2002;John Wallace, University of Washington, 2003, pers.…”

“…[5] The current modeling study responds to the call for extensive, interdisciplinary, multiscale studies of high northern latitude climate through the Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) [Overland et al, 2003]. To integrate observations and modeling efforts into a comprehensive picture of the climate and synoptic meteorology of the Arctic, SEARCH includes the development of a multiyear Arctic System Reanalysis (ASR, http://polarmet.mps.…”
