Abstract:Although we were not able to find a statistically significant association between CD14 genotypes and IRM in our relatively small study population, a further study with a larger sample size is warranted to explore the role of high-producing CD14 genotypes in IRM. Also studies highlighting environmental LPS triggers and other intrinsic mediators of LPS signalling are needed to solve the enigmatic role of LPS in IRM in humans.
“…In humans, clinical studies suggest possible involvement of LPS in recurrent spontaneous abortions and premature labor 7–9 . Effects of LPS on primary placental tissue culture and trophoblasts have been studied intensively, though their effects on human decidual immune cells are poorly understood.…”
IL-2 and IL-12 up-regulated the production of IFN-γ in DMNC through increasing their susceptibility to LPS. TNF-α production is independent of such a mechanism.

“…Do ‘absorbed danger signals’, apart from the neuroendocrine effects of stress, play a role in human miscarriages? There has been no evidence of increased expression of the CD14 LPS receptor in couples with recurrent miscarriages 41 . However, levels of the circulating blood protein α ‐mannan that binds bacterial carbohydrates (such as the saccharide portion of LPS) have been reported to be significantly lower in women with RSA and low mannan levels increased the odds of a subsequent miscarriage 42,43 .…”
High endogenous rates of abortion in the CBA x DBA/2 model may be explained by exposure to LPS at the time of mating. Increased rates of loss triggered by cytokines later in pregnancy may depend on increased absorption of LPS from intestinal flora.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
