“…The latter was determined in both molluscs but in a definitely higher percentage in mussels. This is in accord with previous findings from other research studies . As above mentioned, from the observation of literature data the clam species Venerupis aurea appears to be underinvestigated.…”

“…Many more papers explored fatty acids in mussels of the common species M. galloprovincialis . Previous papers have dealt with changes in fatty acid profiles depending upon season, processing, availability of food, environmental conditions, animals’ tissues . In this study, a method based on the use of comprehensive gas chromatography (GC × GC) was developed for the achievement of bidimensional fingerprints of fatty acids extracted from edible fish and shellfish.…”

“…However, EPA and DHA proportions signifi cantly (p<0.05) differed among the bivalve species. M. galloprovincialis showed the highest EPA level with 11.74% of total FAs, while the highest DHA was found in M. varia and L. tuberculata (10.88-14.41% of total FAs), which is in line with literature data [Bongiorno et al, 2015;Dernekbasi et al, 2015;Prato et al, 2010;Radić et al, 2014;Telahigue et al, 2010]. In turn, Azpeitia et al [2016] in their study with mussels (M. galloprovincialis) cultured in the Bay of Biscay (northern Spain) found lower levels of EPA (8.77%-8.82% of total FAs) and higher levels of DHA (18.24%-22.49%) than those determined in our study.…”

“…The major MUFAs were palmitoleic (C16:1) and oleic (C18:1 n-9) acids, which is in agreement with literature data [Bongiorno et al, 2015;Fuentes et al, 2009]. However, the relative contents of these fatty acids differed widely among all species.…”

“…Bivalve molluscs, besides their fundamental role within the marine ecosystem (Newell, 2004), are of substantial economic value in the aquaculture industry. Indeed marine molluscs, including the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck 1819), a very popular shellfish with a wide geographical distribution worldwide (Branch and Stephani, 2004), are commonly included in human diet because of their exceptional nutritional value (Bongiorno et al, 2015;Cappello et al, 2018). Mussels are routinely used as good bioindicators in ecotoxicological studies (Cappello et al, 2017a(Cappello et al, , 2017bGiannetto et al, 2015Giannetto et al, , 2017Maisano et al, 2017) and, due to their filter-feeding habit, are also known to accumulate large numbers of bacteria from the surrounding waters.…”
