Seasonal Changes in the Structure and Function of Gut Microbiota in the Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus)

Abstract: The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the nutrition, metabolism, and immune function of the host animal. The muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a typical seasonal breeding animal. The present study performed a metagenomic analysis of cecum contents from muskrats in the breeding and non-breeding seasons. The results indicated that the breeding muskrats and non-breeding muskrats differed in gut microbiota structure and function. During the breeding season, the relative abundance of phylum Bacteroidetes, genus … Show more

“…The co‐varied gut bacterial community with seasons might be one of the strategies for semi‐captive Przewalski's gazelles to get through the harsh winter in the high plateau. The results of our study were in line with previous studies and suggested that the seasonal shift of the gut bacterial community is significant for the improvement of animal fitness (Guo et al 2021, Jiang et al 2021, Huang et al 2022, Song et al 2023).…”

“…Before this study, we also performed a metagenomic analysis of the gut microbiota of another seasonal breeding animal, the muskrat ( Ondatra zibethicus ) [ 85 ]. Comparing these two results, we found that their gut microbiota had the opposite ratios of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes concerning the season.…”

“…сказываться на здоровье макроорганизма и препятствовать канцерогенезу, развитию воспаления и метаболических расстройств [34]. Кроме того, ряд исследований продемонстрировали возможность сезонных изменений кишечной микробиоты как у животных, так и у людей, что может быть обусловлено изменением не только характера питания, но и длины светового дня [35][36][37][38][39].…”
