ABSTRACT. Certain aspects of the reproductive dynamics of Argentine red shrimp Pleoticus muelleri (Bate, 1888), distributed between 42°-47°S and 62ºW, were investigated. Data and samples were collected during 36 INIDEP research cruises and 87 commercial fishing fleet trips between 1994-2010. Mature and inseminated females size structure as well as the frequency distribution of macroscopic maturity stages of adult females were analyzed on space-time bases. The seasonal development of ovarian maturity stages microscopically determinated was also assessed. Statistical treatment of data included multivariate scaling and cluster analysis. The reproductive activity of the shrimps showed latitudinal differences concerning its onset and duration that could be associated with the variability of environmental conditions. We discuss a shoreward movement of spawning females related to the presence of coastal hydrographic processes that would ensure retention and food for survival of early life stages. Se estudian ciertos aspectos de la dinámica reproductiva del langostino Pleoticus muelleri (Bate, 1988) en el área comprendida entre 42º-47ºS y 62ºW. Los datos y las muestras analizadas provienen de 36 campañas de investigación del INIDEP y de 87 viajes de la flota comercial langostinera realizados entre 1994 y 2010. Se analiza la estructura de tallas de las hembras maduras e impregnadas, al igual que la distribución de frecuencias de los distintos estadios de madurez sexual de las hembras adultas diferenciados macroscópicamente, desde un enfoque espacio-temporal. La evolución estacional de los estadios de desarrollo ovárico determinados histológicamente también fue contemplada. El tratamiento estadístico de los datos comprendió un escalamiento multivariado y un análisis de agrupamiento jerárquico. La actividad reproductiva del langostino presenta diferenciaciones latitudinales con respecto a su inicio y duración que podría relacionarse con la variabilidad de las condiciones ambientales. Se discute la relación entre el movimiento hacia la costa de las hembras impregnadas y la presencia de procesos hidrográficos costeros que asegurarían la retención y disponibilidad de alimento para la supervivencia de las primeras etapas de vida.

This study characterized the population biology of the dendrobranchiate penaeid shrimp Artemesia longinaris Spence Bate, 1888, focusing on population structure, sexual maturity, reproductive period and recruitment, and comparing reproductive parameters of a different populations along western South Atlantic..Samples were collected monthly from March, 2008 to February, 2010 in Macaé, northern coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, a region influenced by the Cabo Frio upwelling. There was a significantly higher percentage of females and with larger sizes than males. Both carapace length and sexual maturity in Macaé were similar to the dimensions found in populations in the South of the continent (Argentina). Reproductive females were present in all months, with main peaks during winter and summer. Recruitment was also continuous, with peaks, usually one to two months after the appearance of reproductive females, after the reduction of the bottom temperature values of water. These data suggest that November to January would be the appropriate months for legal off-season, due to the higher intensity of spawning females and juveniles during this period. The reproductive biology including insemination frequency, ovarian maturation, gonadosomatic index (GSI), size at Wrst maturity, and fecundity of Melicertus kerathurus were investigated using monthly samples from Thermaikos Gulf. Insemination was recorded by the presence of a spermatophore in the thelycum, and ovarian development was based on macroscopic ovarian staging (ST1-ST5). Inseminated females were found throughout the year with high percentages recorded from April to July. Although all ovarian stages were represented in mated females, insemination increased with size and ovarian maturation. High percentages of vitellogenic or mature ovarian stages were observed from May to July, while immature and developing ovaries were predominant mainly in winter. Spawned ovaries occurred from May to October. Carapace length at Wrst maturity based on the presence of a spermatophore (CL 50sp ) was estimated at 39.20 mm, while that based on the presence of vitellogenic and mature ovaries (CL 50ov ) at 40.70 mm. The seasonal peak in the proportion of mature females (ST4) varied with size. Inseminated females at ST4 and GSI peaked in June-July. GSI varied in relation to insemination status and ovarian stage. In large females (>50 mm CL), the decline in mature ovaries and GSI increment with size indicates a relative reduction in the reproductive output. The number of oocytes ranged from 62,742 to 602,947 (mean § SD: 268,000 § 113,000). As the prawns are targeted during the spawning season, mainly by the artisanal Wshery, and female size at Wrst maturity is selected by artisanal net size, managerial measures toward artisanal Wshery should be implemented.
