Second-Harmonic Generation from Sub-5 nm Gaps by Directed Self-Assembly of Nanoparticles onto Template-Stripped Gold Substrates

Abstract: Strong field enhancement and confinement in plasmonic nanostructures provide suitable conditions for nonlinear optics in ultracompact dimensions. Despite these enhancements, second-harmonic generation (SHG) is still inefficient due to the centrosymmetric crystal structure of the bulk metals used, e.g., Au and Ag. Taking advantage of symmetry breaking at the metal surface, one could greatly enhance SHG by engineering these metal surfaces in regions where the strong electric fields are localized. Here, we combin… Show more

“…The designed metahologram is fabricated on a 370‐nm thick amorphous silicon film as deposited onto a 500‐μm thick glass substrate via electron‐beam lithography (ELS‐7000, Elionix) followed by dry etching of the silicon . The detailed processes and conditions are shown in Section of Supporting Information.…”

“…Obviously, the lateral resolution of SHG is lower than the resolution offered by TEM and PFM. Yet, the quadratic relation between the SHG signal intensity and the electric field amplitude of the fundamental wave provides high sensitivity to small local field discontinuities or enhancements, even if these effects are limited to a region with a size well below the lateral resolution limit37. A further advantage is that the nonlinear optical susceptibility tensor describing the SHG process is directly related to the symmetry of the system and to its ferroic order3538.…”

“…A significant ≈20 000‐fold PL enhancement in the WSe 2 flake can be achieved by integrating it with sub‐20 nm wide trenches in a gold substrate as presented in Figure 14b 149. The schematic diagram illustrates the CVD‐grown WSe 2 monolayer transferred onto gold trenches using the template‐stripping method 150. These trenches have advantages over other plasmonic nanostructures, such as ultra‐smooth surfaces, which will reduce the damping loss due to less plasmon scattering 151,152.…”
