Second Trimester Fetal and Maternal Epicardial Fat Thickness in Gestational Diabetic Pregnancies

Abstract: disease. The secretory activity includes interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, angiotensin II, plasminogen activator, omentin, and nerve growth factor [6, 7]. Moreover, EF tissue also secretes anti-inflammatory and antiaterogenic adipokins such as adiponectin and adrenomedullin [8]. To our knowledge, echocardiographic epicardial fat thickness (EFT) measurement in adults was first attempted by Iacobellis et al. [9, 10] and was reported to vary between 1-23 mm [10]. Becaue EFT measurement seems to be unaff… Show more

“…Fetuses of diabetic mothers have significantly greater EFT than fetuses of nondiabetic mothers between 20 and 28 weeks' gestation . Subsequently, Yavuz et al postulated similar alteration in fetuses of mothers with gestational diabetes . Their measurement technique was not standardized, and both studies compared EFT without considering contributing factors such as BMI of mother and gestational age of the fetus.…”

“…8 Subsequently, Yavuz et al postulated similar alteration in fetuses of mothers with gestational diabetes. 9 Their measurement technique was not standardized, and both studies compared EFT without considering contributing factors such as BMI of mother and gestational age of the fetus. As it is possible that fetuses of obese mothers have increased epicardial fat related to increased insulin resistance (ie, not related to a diagnosis of diabetes), accounting for BMI is important.…”

“…To date, scienti c literature offers very limited information on the ontogenesis of EPI, and not least implications of early life malnutrition on this tissue in comparison with the previously mentioned adipose tissues. In human fetuses, EPI was detected as early as 20-28 weeks of gestation [31,32].…”
