Secondary glaucoma: Toward interventions based on molecular underpinnings

Anna Mueller,
Isabel Lam,
Krishna Kishor
et al.

Abstract: Glaucoma is a heterogeneous group of progressive diseases that leads to irreversible blindness. Secondary glaucoma refers to glaucoma caused by a known underlying condition. Pseudoexfoliation and pigment dispersion syndromes are common causes of secondary glaucoma. Their respective deposits may obstruct the trabecular meshwork, leading to aqueous humor outflow resistance, ocular hypertension, and optic neuropathy. There are no disease‐specific interventions available for either. Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is c… Show more

“…Its strong ability to suppress melanin production, its antioxidant properties, and its capacity to lower intraocular pressure make it a valuable treatment for this condition. In cases of pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, where environmental factors contribute to the development of pseudoexfoliative material, melatonin’s antioxidant and pressure-lowering characteristics may provide additional therapeutic advantages [ 160 ].…”

“…When combined, the number of military personnel and civilians with TON-induced secondary glaucoma is estimated to be more than 40 million worldwide, rendering it a huge social and economic burden (Kang & Tanna, 2021). Glaucoma broadly is divided in two anatomic categories: angle closure and open angle, depending upon whether the angle between iris and cornea is 15 0 or larger (Mueller et al, 2023). They are characterized secondary if a prior disease or injury can be clearly ascribed to its onset or primary if no such clear association can be established.…”
