Secondary localized cutaneous amyloidosis in melanocytic naevi

Abstract: Amyloid deposits were identified within the tumour mass of three melanocytic naevi. Amyloid in this situation is likely to be derived from degenerating naevus cells.

“…The secondary type is, as the name implies, secondary to a lesion or condition. It has been for instance described in cases of tumors (basal cell carcinoma, 45,[156][157][158][159] sweat gland tumors, syringocystadenoma papiliferum, 160 pilomatrixoma, trichoblastoma, and trichoepithelioma 161 ), nevus (linear verrucous epidermal nevus, 162 melanocytic nevus 162,163 ) seborrheic keratosis, 156 actinic keratosis, 164 Bowen disease, 165 inflammatory condition (porokeratosis [166][167][168], mycosis fungoides, 169 or PUVA treatment. 36 Localized cutaneous amyloidosis has rarely been described as secondary to elastosis, with no epidermal changes.…”

“…In some instances, a neurotized dermal nevus may be morphologically indistinguishable from a neurofibroma. Occasional amyloid deposition within the stroma can be observed; this finding is a localized cutaneous form of amyloidosis unassociated with systemic amyloidosis (MacDonald and Black, 1980). Highly neurotized dermal nevi, although often resembling neurofibromata, spare the adventitial dermis of hair follicles and eccrine ducts.…”
