Summary In this paper, we extend our earlier work (where we presented a cross‐domain Session Initiation Protocol solution for mobile ad hoc networks using dynamic clustering) to handle packet losses affecting wireless networks and deal with outbound requests using reputation method. The (extended) solution is designed also to avoid the inherent shortcomings associated with centralized approaches (e.g. single point of failure). Using simulations, we evaluate the extended solution under different conditions. Findings from the evaluations demonstrate the utility of our solution. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) can be defined as a network that is dynamically formed from randomly located mobile devices. SIP protocol allows two remote parties to initiate a call using centralized entities such as a proxy and location registrar. In order to enable the usage of an inherently centralized protocol such as SIP over a distributed environment such as MANET a lot of adaptation should be considered. This paper presents FCSIP, an adapted and semi distributed SIP protocol that works over clustered MANET. FCSIP allows MANET cluster-heads to play the role of SIP discovery servers which can then coordinate their work to allow a SIP client user agent to get the information of another client in order to initiate a call between the two parties. Results of comparing FCSIP with a fully distributed version of SIP shows a considerable improvement achieved by FCSIP regarding the overhead of control messages and the success ratio of SIP queries.

Abstract. The immense growth in wireless network applications has encouraged the researchers to enhance and propose new approaches that facilitate the deployment of the widely used services, protocols, and applications of the wired networking area in the wireless networks. Among which, the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signaling protocol that allows the establishment of multimedia sessions and calls between different parties. SIP functionality totally depends on a centralized infrastructure, and complexity arises when deploying such a protocol in a special type of wireless networks, namely Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANET), due to the absence of a centralized infrastructure, and the dynamic topology of the later. This paper highlights the the challenges arising when deploying SIP in MANETs and presents an overview of different proposed approaches to overcome these challenges.
