Secure Wireless Communication via Intelligent Reflecting Surface

Abstract: An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can adaptively adjust the phase shifts of its reflecting units to strengthen the desired signal and/or suppress the undesired signal. In this letter, we investigate an IRS-aided secure wireless communication system where a multi-antenna access point (AP) sends confidential messages to a single-antenna user in the presence of a single-antenna eavesdropper. In particular, we consider the challenging scenario where the eavesdropping channel is stronger than the legitimate c… Show more

“…Moreover, Fig. 3b plots the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of ζ ℓ based on the simulation, the exact CDF in (14) and the approximate CDF in (17) for σ 2 = 0.1, 1.0, 10 which represent very small, moderate and large variance values. The exact CCDF match tightly with the Gamma approximation for the simulated t range for all σ 2 , confirming the validity of the approximation.…”

“…From the physical layer security perspective, IRS assisted wireless secrecy communication was recently investigated in [1], [5]- [8]. Via jointly designing the active transmit beamforming and the passive reflect beamforming of the IRS that is usually deployed near the legitimate receiver, the achievable secrecy rate can be significantly improved.…”

“…In [11], the authors jointly optimized the beamforming vectors at the BS and the phase shifts at the IRS for maximization of the secrecy rate of a legitimate user. In [12], an alternating optimization-based algorithm was developed to achieve secure communication for an IRS-aided MISO system with a single user. However, in [10]- [12], artificial noise (AN) is not employed for security enhancement.…”
