Security and Privacy Concerns in the Adoption of Iot Smart Homes: A User-Centric Analysis

Abstract

The emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies marks a transformative phase in home automation, promising enhanced convenience and efficiency. These technologies offer a multitude of applications that can greatly enhance daily living experiences. With IoT, users gain the ability to remotely manage household devices, control appliances from afar, and receive automated alerts in case of anomalies. However, despite the potential benefits, concerns surrounding security and privacy hinder widespread trust and adoption of these applications. Addressing these concerns is paramount for the broader acceptance and deployment of IoT technologies in smart homes. Various solutions have been proposed to tackle security and privacy issues, yet significant challenges persist, impeding widespread adoption. A user-centric approach emerges as a promising avenue to mitigate many of these challenges. By prioritizing user needs and preferences, it becomes possible to tailor security and privacy measures effectively while supporting diverse IoT applications. We evaluated the proposed IoT smart home adoption model using SMART-PLS version (4.0.9.6), The results show that the proposed relationships are statistically significant (R2 = 0.762). Our research sheds light on the crucial security and privacy considerations within the IoT smart home domain, offering valuable insights into the factors influencing user adoption decisions. This contribution advances the discourse surrounding IoT technology adoption and lays the groundwork for future research and policy initiatives in the dynamic landscape of smart homes.
