Security and Privacy in Ad-Hoc and Sensor Networks

In this paper, we propose a trust-based vehicular platoon crowdsensing scheme, named TripSense, in VANET. The proposed TripSense scheme introduces a trust-based system to evaluate vehicles’ sensing abilities and then selects the more capable vehicles in order to improve sensing results accuracy. In addition, the sensing tasks are accomplished by platoon member vehicles and preprocessed by platoon head vehicles before the data are uploaded to server. Hence, it is less time-consuming and more efficient compared with the way where the data are submitted by individual platoon member vehicles. Hence it is more suitable in ephemeral networks like VANET. Moreover, our proposed TripSense scheme integrates unlinkable pseudo-ID techniques to achieve PM vehicle identity privacy, and employs a privacy-preserving sensing vehicle selection scheme without involving the PM vehicle’s trust score to keep its location privacy. Detailed security analysis shows that our proposed TripSense scheme not only achieves desirable privacy requirements but also resists against attacks launched by adversaries. In addition, extensive simulations are conducted to show the correctness and effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

Energy/Area-Efficient Scalar Multiplication with Binary Edwards Curves for the IoT

Making Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) available for the Internet of Things (IoT) and related technologies is a recent topic of interest. Modern IoT applications transfer sensitive information which needs to be protected. This is a difficult task due to the processing power and memory availability constraints of the physical devices. ECC mainly relies on scalar multiplication (kP)—which is an operation-intensive procedure. The broad majority of kP proposals in the literature focus on performance improvements and often overlook the energy footprint of the solution. Some IoT technologies—Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in particular—are critically sensitive in that regard. In this paper we explore energy-oriented improvements applied to a low-area scalar multiplication architecture for Binary Edwards Curves (BEC)—selected given their efficiency. The design and implementation costs for each of these energy-oriented techniques—in hardware—are reported. We propose an evaluation method for measuring the effectiveness of these optimizations. Under this novel approach, the energy-reducing techniques explored in this work contribute to achieving the scalar multiplication architecture with the most efficient area/energy trade-offs in the literature, to the best of our knowledge.

Revisiting the Feasibility of Public Key Cryptography in Light of IIoT Communications

Digital certificates are regarded as the most secure and scalable way of implementing authentication services in the Internet today. They are used by most popular security protocols, including Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS). The lifecycle management of digital certificates relies on centralized Certification Authority (CA)-based Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs). However, the implementation of PKIs and certificate lifecycle management procedures in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environments presents some challenges, mainly due to the high resource consumption that they imply and the lack of trust in the centralized CAs. This paper identifies and describes the main challenges to implement certificate-based public key cryptography in IIoT environments and it surveys the alternative approaches proposed so far in the literature to address these challenges. Most proposals rely on the introduction of a Trusted Third Party to aid the IIoT devices in tasks that exceed their capacity. The proposed alternatives are complementary and their application depends on the specific challenge to solve, the application scenario, and the capacities of the involved IIoT devices. This paper revisits all these alternatives in light of industrial communication models, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and providing an in-depth comparative analysis.
