Security in the Interparental Subsystem (SIS) Scale: Psychometric Characteristics in a Sample of Portuguese Adolescents

Abstract: The Security in the Interparental Subsystem Scale (SIS) is based on emotional security theory. This study examined the psychometric properties of an adaptation of the SIS to a sample of Portuguese adolescents (60.3 % girls; 10 to 18 years old; Mage=13 years; N=229), recruited in public schools. Discriminant and concurrent validity were assessed by analyzing SIS dimensions associations with adolescents' exposure to interparental conflict (IC), and psychological adjustment, respectively. Exploratory and confirma… Show more

“…Adolescents' emotional insecurity was evaluated through the Security in the Interparental Subsystem Scale e Child Report (SIS; Davies, Forman, et al, 2002), adapted and validated on a sample of Portuguese adolescents (Silva, Calheiros, & Carvalho, 2016). An important advantage of this measure is its ability to assess multiple response domains of emotional insecurity (Davies, Forman, et al, 2002).…”

“…In addition, the avoidance dimension was split into inhibition avoidance and withdrawal avoidance. Despite decreasing the number of factors compared to the original scale, it is concluded that the Portuguese version corresponds to the TES and supports the structure of the original SIS (Silva et al, 2016).…”

“…As per previous studies, the SIS presents four different structural versions, therefore, all factor structures found in the literature were tested, including the scale in its original version (Cummings & Davies, 2010;Davies et al, 2002;Holt et al, 2020;Holt et al, 2021;Silva et al, 2016). The models tested are presented in Table 1.…”
