Seds: The Spitzer Extended Deep Survey. Survey Design, Photometry, and Deep Irac Source Counts

Abstract: The Spitzer Extended Deep Survey (SEDS) is a very deep infrared survey within five well-known extragalactic science fields: the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey, the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, COSMOS, the Hubble Deep Field North, and the Extended Groth Strip. SEDS covers a total area of 1.46 deg 2 to a depth of 26 AB mag (3σ ) in both of the warm Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) bands at 3.6 and 4.5 μm. Because of its uniform depth of coverage in so many widely-separated fields, SEDS is subject to roughly 25% smal… Show more

“…redshifts. For identification of counterparts, the J/K/H-band positions from the CANDELS (Koekemoer et al 2011;Grogin et al 2012) CDFS field (Guo et al 2013;Hsieh et al 2012) are used in combination with midinfrared positions from IRAC (Damen et al 2011;Ashby et al 2013). A Bayesian method was developed that matches X-ray positions to mid-and near-infrared counterparts simultaneously (Budavári & Szalay 2008;Salvato et al in prep).…”

“…In particular, they include very deep imaging with the IRAC instrument aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope from the Spitzer Extended Deep Survey (SEDS; Ashby et al 2013), covering the CANDELS fields to a 3σ depth of 26 AB mag at both 3.6 and 4.5 μm, that are crucial for sampling the rest-frame optical bands at z > 4.…”

“…Moreover, the physical properties of high-redshift galaxies, such as their star formation rates (SFR) and stellar masses, can now be determined with meaningful accuracy up to z 7−8 (Labbé et al 2010(Labbé et al , 2013, thanks to the combined power of deep space-based (HST, Spitzer) and ground-based (VLT) near-mid infrared imaging (Retzlaff et al 2010;Fontana et al 2014;Ashby et al 2013).…”

“…At z = 3.1 MIR bands trace the lower mass stars which make up most of the baryonic mass in galaxies. Where available we obtained IRAC data for the HDF-N sample from Ashby et al (2013) and for the SSA22 sample from the Spitzer archive (originally from GO project 30328). Applying the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test gave a p-value of 0.97 for [4.5] <24, (where both catalogues are approximately complete), confirming that the two samples have a statistically identical stellar mass distribution.…”
