Seed journal citation network maps: A method based on network theory

Abstract: The study presented here shows a method based on network theory to identify the most important journals related to a given journal, the seed journal. In just one simple network map, we get the relevant citation environment of a specific seed journal. It is of interest to librarians, publishers, scientists and science policy makers. These journal citation network maps are useful for these various stakeholders in and around the science system, as they provide information on the level of journal connections, unli… Show more

“…Among the different bibliometric methods, this paper adopts the science mapping, which allow for mapping the cognitive structure and evolution of scientific fields and disciplines (Noyons et al 1999) producing a spatial representation of them (Calero Medina and Leeuwen 2012;Small 1999). Based on the citation index, the most important papers on customer loyalty and brand management have been identified and analyzed to display the structural and dynamic aspects of scientific research (Börner et al 2003;Morris and Van der Veer Martens 2008).…”

“…However, in this case, the adjacency matrix is quite dense, and the network representation is difficult to read (Ghoniem, Fekete, & Castagliola, ). A representation with the 25% strongest citation links with a spring embedder as layout (Butts, ), as in Calero Medina and van Leeuwen (), is available as Figure 4 at http://www3.uji.es/~epifanio/RESEARCH/asyhplot.rar.…”

“…The first step in the proposed method is to identify a small number of key, or "seed," articles on which citation relationships can subsequently be based. Starting with a set of key articles echoes the use of training sets for machine learning techniques and has been proposed for bibliometric tasks in a variety of contexts, such as identifying journal relationships (Medina & van Leeuwen, 2012), for author name disambiguation (Reijnhoudt, Costas, Noyons, Börner, & Scharnhorst, 2014), and information retrieval (Glänzel, 2015). How many key articles are necessary for the proposed method to work is an open question.…”
