Seeing Is Believing: Making Wellbeing More Tangible

Abstract: Positive Psychology has been instrumental in promoting wellbeing science in the modern era. However, there are still ways in which positive psychology interventions and positive education programmes can be improved to achieve more robust and sustained effects. One suggested method is to make wellbeing more salient and tangible through the use of objective tools that assess the relationship between psychological and physiological wellbeing, and enable wellbeing status and change to be seen. With the addition of… Show more

“…A related point is the potential for low coherence between physiological responses and subjective report, which may reflect denial or poor interoceptive capacities (Vella-Brodrick et al, 2022). In summary, we suggest that HRV may provide an upstream mediator of wellbeing, rather than a surrogate measure of it.…”

“…Finally, there is a need to move beyond simplistic models and toward more sophisticated models that better reflect the complexity and inter-relationships between various proposed mechanisms and their moderators, highlighting a need for future work involving causal path modeling to further explore putative relationships. A related point is the potential for low coherence between physiological responses and subjective report, which may reflect denial or poor interoceptive capacities (Vella-Brodrick et al, 2022 ). In summary, we suggest that HRV may provide an upstream mediator of wellbeing, rather than a surrogate measure of it.…”

“…Some of the existing structures that focus on social and mental aspects are not novel. Vella-Brodrick et al [50] suggest interdisciplinary, objective, and technology-supported approaches to expand and complement what already exists. Developing a broader conceptualization of wellbeing by integrating complementary disciplines and theories could lead to an improved understanding and innovative approaches to enhance wellbeing in schools.…”

“…This inevitably caused interference with HRV measurements, given that distractions in participants' home environments were unable to be controlled for. Despite the constraints faced in the process of the evaluation, overall best efforts were made to utilise what resources were available to contribute towards the goal of progressing from single, self-reported measures toward utilising diverse methods, including physiological data, to understand wellbeing in a more holistic and multi-faceted way [98].…”
