The use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) not only reduces the demand for natural aggregates (NA) but also might improve the behavior of soil under earthquake loading. In this study, the behavior of the pavement constructed using 100% RCA and NA on a sandy soil layer with high liquefaction potential under dynamic loads was investigated by numerical analysis and compared with free field conditions. For this purpose, first, the classical geotechnical properties of 100% RCA and NA materials were obtained, and then the stiffness properties were determined by resilient modulus and permanent deformation tests. In the second stage, three different models were created with pavement with NA and RCA and without pavement on high liquefaction potential sand, and dynamic analyses were carried out by PM4Sand. Numerical analyses show that constructing a subbase and base layers significantly reduces liquefaction-induced settlement on the surface of flexible pavements built on liquefied soils. Moreover, when the case of using RCA instead of NA in the subbase and base layers built on the liquefied soil is examined, the liquefaction-induced settlement values on the surface are obtained either lower or very close. Consequently, this study proposes a new alternative to the use of RCA waste materials instead of NA. It is expected the use of these waste materials will reduce the need for storage space and also reduce the negative environmental effects associated with storage.

The aim of this study was to apply deep excavation behavior prediction models in the geotechnical field to establish localized soil parameters for gravel layers. Common software tools, including PLAXIS and SoilWorks, were used extensively. Monitoring data from deep excavation cases related to gravel layers in the Xindian area of Taiwan were collected. In the background analysis, the deformation of the retaining walls was used instead of parameters typically used in deep excavation analysis. This was performed to provide the ideal range recommendations for the input parameters when conducting a numerical simulation analysis of the Xindian District stratum or similar strata. The assessment results show that when setting the fifth layer of gravel to SPT-N = 100, PLAXIS suggested a soil elastic modulus range of 7840 N to 9800 N per square meter (kN/m2), while SoilWorks recommended a range of 2450 N to 3430 N per square meter (kN/m2). These ranges allow for a reasonable estimation of the maximum wall deformation during the final excavation stage. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that when conducting an excavation analysis in gravel layers in the Xindian area of Taiwan or in similar strata, engineers should refer to the abovementioned recommended ranges when selecting the soil elastic modulus for different software programs. This will enhance the accuracy of the deformation predictions during the final excavation stage.

The significance means of the seismic reinforcement effect of a pile-anchor system for slope reinforcement has been widely recognized. However, cases of deformation failure and instability sliding of the pile-anchor system itself and the reinforced slope under seismic action continue to be recorded. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the seismic performance of slopes reinforced by a pile-anchor system to prevent the system’s failure. Current evaluation models of a slope reinforced by a pile-anchor system mainly focus on slope stability; however, the safety of the pile-anchor system itself is not sufficiently considered in these models. Consequently, in this study, we propose a multi-objective optimization evaluation (MOE) model for evaluating the seismic performance of slopes reinforced by a pile-anchor system that considers slope stability, safety of the pile-anchor system, and dynamic response of the slope. This model considers slope displacement, acceleration amplification factor of a slope, pile displacement, and anchor displacement as negative indexes, and anti-slide pile bending moment, shear force, and anchor axial force as intermediate indexes. The comprehensive weight of relevant indexes is obtained by combining subjective and objective weights, and the seismic reinforcement effect of the pile-anchor system is evaluated subsequently. In conclusion, the MOE model proposed in this study provides a novel solution for the optimization evaluation of a slope reinforced by a pile-anchor system in forthcoming projects.
