Seismic Isolation for Protecting Historical Buildings: A Case Study

Abstract: The protection of cultural heritage from seismic risk is an open issue due to the difficulties in finding technical solutions allowing a balance between their effectiveness and invasiveness. Among the available protection techniques, seismic isolation is one of the most suitable obtaining a significant performance improvement by acting on a limited portion of the structure. In this paper, it is shown an application of such technique on a reinforced concrete frame building cataloged as of historical interest by… Show more

“…Extending the natural period of the structure from the prevailing frequency of ground movements is based on the principle of significantly reducing the acceleration transmitted to the superstructure. The separation of the superstructure and the foundation via sliding and flexible systems placed on the base forms the basis of seismic isolation [17][18][19][20][21][22][23]. This application gives the building a base period much higher than the fixed-base duration.…”

“…In order to reuse this important Heritage, the seismic update is mandatory while a more functional architectonic project is attended. erefore, the structural analysis involves many action steps: geometrical and structural survey (diagnostic), global analysis ante-operam, choice of the strengthening interventions, design, global analysis post-operam and monitoring according to the ISCARSAH's Recommendations and many other cases study, [1][2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…A seismically isolated structure is a structure in which an isolation layer is installed at the foundation level or at an intermediate story level of the building (AIJ, 2016;Charleson and Guisasola, 2017). Seismic isolation has been applied to newly constructed buildings and in the seismic rehabilitation of existing buildings in earthquake-prone countries (e.g., Seki et al, 2000;Kashima et al, 2008;Cardone and Gesualdi, 2014;D'Amato et al, 2019;Terenzi et al, 2020).…”
