The Brazilian Equatorial Margin (BEM) is interpreted as a transform margin, where the last segment opened during Gondwana rifting. However, margin evolution, and break‐up age remain unconstrained. We interpret >10k km of crustal‐scale seismic images extending along ∼600 km of the margin calibrated with drillholes. We determine the style and timing of tectonics across the rift system. We link changes in crustal‐scale structure and age of sediment deposits to interpret variations with the style of extension and intensity of thinning across the BEM. Observations support a rift evolution where deformation is initially distributed forming a shallow basin, subsequently focusses, and later migrates basin‐ward forming the deep‐water domain. We interpret that tectonic activity started ∼140–136 Ma and stopped earlier in the shallow basin causing minor thinning, than in the deep‐water domain with a ∼60 km wide area with 4–8 km thick crust extended in Late Aptian to Early Albian (116–110 Ma). Constraints from seismic and drilling help define an abrupt continent to ocean transition (COT) where continental crust may be abutted by oceanic crust, and breakup occurred at early Albian time. Basin sedimentation from the onset to the Late Aptian is continental, indicating an isolated environment disconnected from Atlantic oceans. During late‐most Aptian to Early Albian basin sedimentation changes and indicates a comparatively rapid marine water infill. Rifting of the BEM is not dominated by transcurrent deformation as previously inferred, with strike‐slip faulting limited to comparatively small sectors, whereas most of the margin extended by normal faulting deformation.

Stratigraphy along the Brazilian Equatorial Margin is a crucial guide to the geodynamic history of rifting of Pangea and formation of the South Atlantic Ocean. Understanding the evolution of the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, which intersects the Saint Paul and Romanche Fracture Zones on the western margin of South Atlantic Ocean, is also key for reconstructing eustatic histories and natural resource exploration. In this study, we quantify the stratigraphic and subsidence histories of three sedimentary basins—Barreirinhas, Ceará, Potiguar—that sit within the margin. Stratigraphy was mapped using ca. 900‐line‐km of two‐dimensional seismic data. Biostratigraphic and check‐shot data from 23 wells drilled on the continental shelf, slope and in the distal parts of these basins were used to date and depth‐convert stratigraphy. Check‐shot data were also used to parameterise compaction. The mapped stratigraphy was backstripped to calculate subsidence histories for the basins. Subsidence curves were decompacted, water‐loaded and corrected for palaeo‐water depths using biostratigraphic data from well reports. The mapped stratigraphy of the Barreirinhas and Ceará Basins and theoretical subsidence curves indicate that stretching factors did not exceed 1.6. These values suggest that these basins can be regarded as failed rifts. In contrast, more distal stratigraphy mapped in the Potiguar Basin to the south indicates that it stretched by a factor of 5–6. Calculated subsidence histories indicate that this basin formed primarily because of Cretaceous rifting and Cretaceous to Recent post‐rift thermal sag, with amplitudes governed by the amount of initial stretching.

Geólogo formado pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), se fez ingresso em 2014 concluindo os estudos no início de 2019. Foi integrante durante 3 anos do Laboratório de Geologia Marinha Aplicada (LGMA), atuando com geologia costeira, marinha e do quaternário. Durante esse período realizou levantamentos batimétricos, análises químicas, separação e elaboração de lâminas de minerais pesados, aquisição de testemunhos e monitoramento hidrosedimentológico. Ao longo da graduação foi monitor das disciplinas Petrografia Sedimentar e Sedimentologia. Durante os dois últimos semestres, teve a oportunidade de estagiar na área de hidrogeologia e participar do cadastramento de poços tubulares, acompanhar levantamentos geofísicos e análises hidrogeológicas em diversos municípios do Ceará.Em 2019 deu início a pós-graduação no Instituto de Geociências da UNICAMP, com foco em análises de bacias. Ao longo do mestrado concentrou esforços na interpretação de linhas sísmicas da margem equatorial e dados de poços, realizando modelagem estrutural, geológica, amarração de poços, conversão de domínios, descompactação de camadas, análises de evolução geodinâmica e estratigráfica. Exerceu também a função de secretário de relações públicas na Gestão de 2020 do capítulo estudantil da AAPG/UNICAMP. Concomitante a pós-graduação, o autor exerceu a função de técnico de laboratório no Laboratório de Solos e Geologia da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas, atuando com a aplicação de ensaios geotécnicos, entre abril/2019 a abril/2020. Após esse período até o momento da publicação desta dissertação, o autor exerceu a função de Analista de Meio Ambiente na Química Amparo (Ypê), realizando análises hidrogeológicas e hidrológicas, com experiência em cálculos de vazões mínimas (q7,10), vazão de permanência (q95), estimativa de recarga de aquíferos, análises hidrogeoquímica, elaboração de Planos Diretores de Consumo e Captação Hídrica (PDCCH) e avaliação da viabilidade de métodos de recarga artificial de aquíferos.Dedicado à minha família.
