There are personal and institutional decisions that can increase the seismic resilience of the buildings in a city. However, some of these decisions are possible if we have basic knowledge of buildings' seismic risk. The present document describes the main results of a detailed study of seismic vulnerability and seismic risk of residential buildings of Ciutat Vella (the ancient district of Barcelona) and Nou Barris (one of the newest districts of Barcelona). In this study, we assessed seismic risk according to the Vulnerability Index Method-Probabilistic named as VIM_P. Moreover, we analyzed the influence of basic buildings' features in the final vulnerability and seismic risk values. For instance, we assessed the seismic vulnerability and the seismic risk of groups of buildings defined according to the number of stories of the buildings. Findings of this research reveal that the annual frequency of exceedance of the collapse damage state in Ciutat Vella buildings is, on average, 4.7 times higher than for the buildings in Nou Barris. Moreover, according to the Best vulnerability curve, 70.31% and 2.81% of Ciutat Vella and Nou Barris buildings, respectively, have an annual frequency of exceedance of the collapse damage state greater than 1x10 -5 .

Heritage structures built in the 19th and 20th centuries in the western part of Romania are marked by the significant aesthetic influence of the Austro-Hungarian empire, with highly decorated façades facing the street and rather more simple surfaces towards the back and inner courtyard. This region is also marked by shallow earthquakes, which significantly affect the structural integrity of these buildings. Considering the current climatic context, energy efficiency regulations that also apply to the refurbishment of heritage structures, and the additional need by private owners and authorities to reduce the seismic vulnerability of these structures, it is necessary to develop integrated solutions that could improve the thermal performance of the building and strengthen its load-bearing structure, while preserving the highly valuable aesthetic features that are visible from the street. Therefore, this study is intended to investigate the viability of using different thermal rehabilitation solutions and materials that are suitable for the architectural characteristics of heritage buildings, while also integrating seismic strengthening solutions. These solutions are applied to a 19th-century building that comprises all the specific architectural and structural features found in the western part of Romania. It compares the effectiveness of using mineral-based insulation materials, cork and lime-based plasters, and aerogel–lime-based plaster applied to the inner or outer parts of the wall, depending on the solution. This solution to the problem will combine suitable wet, strengthening techniques that can be used on the inner part of the exterior walls without affecting the aesthetic value of the building. In this way, through the analysed results, this study provides valuable insights concerning potential suitable solutions that can be used to increase sustainability and reduce the seismic vulnerability of heritage masonry buildings.

Historic buildings are complex structures in which all the composing elements work together. Studies of heritage structures after seismic events have shown that timber roof structures strongly influence the seismic response of masonry structures, being able to reduce or enhance the out-of-plane displacement of the structure. Starting from these observations, three different types of roof structures, from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, were introduced in the finite-element simulation software SCIA Engineer. The roof structures were subsequently placed on the same eighteenth-century masonry building with a ground floor and two upper floors, respecting its geometric features. Simulations were performed considering successively rigid, hinged or sliding connections between the roof and the masonry structure. At the same time, the traditionally crafted joints of the roof structures were consecutively modelled as hinged, rigid and semi-rigid (determined using three different methods). Ultimately, the top horizontal displacement, inter-storey drift and damage level of the masonry structure were compared. The main aims of this study were to observe if roof structures have an influence on the seismic behaviour of masonry buildings and to determine if selected parameters suffer any changes depending on the roof structure type, the roof–wall connections and joints’ axial stiffness.
