Selected qualitative and biochemical parameters of cryopreserved semen of Holstein-Friesian (HF) AI bulls

Abstract: Selected qualitative and biochemical parameters were determined in cryopreserved semen used for artificial insemination, sampled from 120 bulls reared at the Animal Breeding and Insemination Center in Bydgoszcz. The total average motility of the analyzed sperm samples was determined at 62.51%. The percentage of motile spermatozoa displaying progressive forward motility was 21.65%. Analyzed samples were characterized by a high percentage of sperm cells with a intact plasma membrane (71.21%) and active mitochond… Show more

“…The progressive motility of frozen Sahiwal bull semen reported in this study agrees with the findings of Lecewicz et al (2015); Dolezalova (2016); Baloch et al (2019) and Mostari et al (2004). However, the findings of the present study are lower than the findings of some previous research works (Sugulle et al, 2006;Ansari et al, 2010;Gopinthan et al, 2018) and higher than the findings of Ulfina et al (2002).…”

“…Los valores encontrados para la actividad enzimática antioxidante del semen criopreservado (Cuadro 1) fueron superiores a los reportados por Lecewicz et al (2015). Sin embargo, se conoce que la actividad enzimática antioxidante podría incrementarse por el aporte de los diferentes componentes de los diluyentes, como la YH (Restrepo et al, 2016); un medio rico en antioxidantes no enzimáticos como la vitamina E, la vitamina B12, la biotina y la fosvitina (Seuss-Baum, 2007).…”

“…SOD and GPX activity were previously measured in ram seminal plasma: SOD and GPX levels were higher in rams supplemented with vitamin C and E by oral administration, in comparison to the control group (rams without oral supplementation) [ 23 ]. Different authors described low levels of these enzymatic antioxidants were related with high DNA damage in bulls [ 24 ] and low motility in stallions [ 25 ]. In recent years, different analyses related to oxidative stress have been described considering the beneficial and detrimental role of ROS and considering the redox balance as a more accurate parameter in oxidative stress studies [ 26 ].…”

“…The MiOXSYS ® system is a new technology to conjointly evaluate redox balance by a galvanostatic-method [ 27 ]. The MiOXSYS ® system allows detection of variations in oxidant capacity in semen samples [ 24 ]. To summarize, the analysis of oxidative stress should be addressed with different oxidative stress markers, such as enzymatic activity of antioxidants located in seminal plasma (SOD, GPX, CAT), and through considering redox balance in a global way.…”
