Selecting highly sensitive non-obese diabetic mice for improving the study of Sjögren’s syndrome

Abstract: BUT and CTT tests are useful methods in screening high susceptible NOD mice. Cutting lines at BUT < or = 2 seconds and CTT < or = 4 mm/min provide a good balance between the assurance of susceptibility and the maximization of use of NOD mice for the study of Sjögren's syndrome.

“…In addition to being resistant to diabetes, B −/− mice are resistant to many other autoimmune diseases, such as thyroiditis, Sjögren syndrome, arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus . Some WT NOD mice develop lymphocyte infiltration of salivary glands and thyroid glands characteristic of Sjögren syndrome and thyroiditis . Salivary gland infiltration was significantly increased in Treg‐cell‐depleted B −/− mice compared with controls (Fig.…”

“…In patients with meibomian gland dysfunction MGD and those with Sjogren’s syndrome, compared with normal participants, the concentrations of tear IL-1α and mature IL-1β were increased, and precursor IL-1β was decreased [ 30 ]. Experimentally, the production of IL-1β in tears has been linked to inflammation [ 39 ],[ 40 ],[ 59 ],[ 60 ],[ 114 ],[ 115 ].…”

“…NOD mice are susceptible to the spontaneous development of autoimmune insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (55). Moreover, it facilitates investigating the influence of autoimmune processes on dry eye syndrome (56,57). Lymphocytic infiltration leads to the degradation of extracellular matrix structures in the lacrimal gland of NOD mice (58).…”
