Selecting Natural Fibers for Bio-Based Materials with Conflicting Criteria

Abstract: Proper material selection enhances both desired physical and meta-physical properties of the end user products. Due to the growing awareness of the environmental issues as well as the industrial sustainability, the Natural Fiber Composites (NFCs) have recently emphasized to be implemented in various industrial applications. The final product features of such composites depend on the integrated characteristics of both matrix and fillers properties. Selecting an appropriate natural fiber type to form an NFC is a… Show more

“…Furthermore, some of the methods neglect the uncertainty criteria such as ANP. Some practice combined the criteria for a better evaluation [85], [121]. The criteria or alternative is involve both qualitative and quantitative measurement, Sabaei et al [122] mentioned about the weakness of the PROMOTHEE that cannot deal with qualitative data because there is no weighting process.…”

“…In this paper, the term 'natural fiber' that is commonly discussed in packaging is referred as 'plant fibers' or sometimes termed as 'lignocellulosic fibers' or 'cellulosic fibers' [7], [41]. Similar to synthetic fibers like carbon or glass fiber, natural fibers reinforced composites materials and controlled the unique properties of the final materials for better stiffness and adequate strength [7], [42]- [44].…”

“…Moreover, the application of natural and renewable raw materials on industrial product developments can support the achievement of sustainable societies and contribute to solve problems related to petroleum based products [19][20][21] . In addition, composites performance can be improved by proper material selection, which is crucial for achieve sustainable designs and product properties 22 . In this context, recent methodologies were developed for material selection, which are based on analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and might be applied to solve multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems 19,20 .…”
