Selection for optimal exit ramp type on Florida’s freeways based on operational analysis

Abstract: In the State of Florida, several types of exit ramps are used, including single-lane exit ramp with a taper, single-lane exit ramp without a taper, two-lane exit ramp with an optional lane, and two-lane exit ramp without an optional lane. Drivers exiting freeways need to make maneuver decisions (lane change, lane merge, and decelerate) prior to exit ramps in order to access cross roads at interchanges. Different exit ramp types lead to varying driving maneuvers when exiting, affecting the operational and safet… Show more

“…In face of the complex transportation environment of TEAS, a more sensible approach would be to start with road infrastructure with good design strategies to improve the potential of the road itself in terms of capacity, etc. Based on the requirements of modern sustainable transportation, the evaluation of the scheme should not be limited to a single index, but rather a multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) method may be needed [ 40 ]. The entropy evaluation method has been widely used in various fields, such as physics [ 41 ], economics [ 42 ], and medicine [ 43 ], which allows a comprehensive judgment of the merits of a scheme instead of being limited to a certain index, and shows the potential of the entropy method to be applied to transportation disciplines.…”

“…In another study, data were collected at 24 stations in Florida, traffic simulations were performed using an integrated traffic software system, and mathematical models were used to compare the operational performance of different types of ramps. Finally, the significance weights of effectiveness indicators were calculated using the analytical hierarchy process method to derive comprehensive evaluation results [35]. Also in Florida, researchers collected crash data from 343 of the state's freeway segments to analyze the relationship between the different types of exit ramps and safety benefits, demonstrating that the use of lane balancing significantly improves safety performance in exit areas [36].…”
