Selection of materials using multi-criteria decision-making methods with minimum data

Abstract: Selection of material for a specific engineering component, which plays a significant role in its design and proper functioning, is often treated as a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem where the most suitable material is to be chosen based on a given set of conflicting criteria. For solving these MCDM problems, the designers do not generally know what should be the optimal number of criteria required for arriving at the best decisive action. Those criteria should be independent to each other and th… Show more

“…The TOPSIS method instigates two reference points using vector normalization; however, it does not contemplate the relative significance of the distances from these reference points. It means that the best alternative in the TOPSIS method may not always mean that it is the closest to the ideal solution [27]. As a typical formulation of DEA builds a separate linear program for every alternative, so it becomes computationally intensive.…”

“…The application of any MCDM method for solving a decision-making problem usually involves the three main steps, i.e. i) determination of the relevant conflicting criteria and feasible alternatives, ii) measurement of the relative importance of the considered criteria and impact of the alternatives on those criteria, and iii) determination of the performance measures of the alternatives for ranking (Chakraborty and Chatterjee 2013). The procedure of the application of the MOORA method is simple and consists of the following steps:…”

“…There are many different optimization techniques that have been used to select the most suitable material source for design or farming. For instance, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) [6], TOPSIS [7,14], Gray relational analysis (GRA) [8], VIKOR method [9], MOORA method [2,4,10] and MCDM method [11,13,[19][20][21]24], etc. Because in evaluating the selection of ingredients or mixing formulations used for mushroom cultivation, the above analysis has the infection rates of fungi brought by the ingredients.…”
