Selective arterial embolization in the treatment of aneurysmal bone cyst and angioma of bone

Abstract: Nineteen aneurysmal bone cysts and five angiomas of bone were treated by selective arterial embolization. The median follow-up was 22 months. In 17 patients healing occurred with complete relief of symptoms; in 11 of these almost complete ossification of the lesion resulted. In the remaining cases, little or no ossification was apparent but ossification may take 1 year or more to occur. No recurrence was observed in any of these cases. Recurrence occurred only in two cases. In one, growth of the recurrence sto… Show more

“…It facilitates resection by minimizing blood loss and enables safer resection. 17,19,22,30,43,54,63 The estimated blood loss during resection of spinal column neoplasms after embolization (1.5-2.2 L) is less than that lost when preoperative embolization is not performed (9.5-12 L). 22,63 When feasible, provocative testing before definitive occlusion is performed to reduce complications associated with the embolization procedure.…”

“…In the series of De Cristofaro et al, 11 patients had almost complete ossification at 22 months. 6 In our patient, CT scans were obtained approximately 4 months apart and demonstrated how quickly a young patient can recover. Perhaps most importantly, this case demonstrates that arterial embolization does not deter new bone growth.…”

“…Recurrence rate is seen as 10-44 % of cases [2,3,7]. Recently, embolotherapy has been used to treat vascular bone tumors to limit blood loss at surgery or as definitive therapy to when surgery is not feasible [18].…”
