Selective chemical oxidation or reduction of chlorophenols with potassium nitrosodisulfonate

Abstract: The selective chemical oxidation or reduction of several substituted chlorophenols (2-chloro, 4-chloro, and 2,4-dichloro) was carried out with potassium nitrosodisulfonate. The reaction was followed by NMR and HPLC. This reaction was strongly dependent on the amount of potassium nitrosodisulfonate, the position of the chloro-substituent on the aromatic ring, the pH and temperature of reaction. At short reaction times, 4-chorophenol was selectively oxidized to 1,4-benzoquinone and 2-chlorophenol to 2-chloro-1,4… Show more

“…Detailed EPR measurements are presented that investigate the formation of photoinduced paramagnetic centers in support of the information obtained by the photocatalytic tests. Note that a study of the degradation mechanism and identification of intermediate reaction products of the pollutants lies beyond the scope of this article and has already been thoroughly described in the literature. The outcome of the latter studies is used here in the interpretation of the obtained data.…”

“…Chlorophenols are catalogued as one of the priority pollutants (Clean Water Act and by European Directive 2013/39/EU) according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) 1 3 because they are toxic and potentially carcinogenic compounds 2 . They are considerate one of the most important classes of water contaminants due to they are difficult to remove from the environment 2 5 and they can appear in drinking water when hypochlorite reacts during water disinfection 4 . Thus, they are of great concern.…”

“…Thus, the effect of chloride ions on CP oxidation kinetics should be demonstrated in detail. There was different reactivity for different CPs with different positions of chloride atoms due to the σ-electron withdrawing conductive effect, π-electron donating conjugative effect, and steric hindrance effect of chlorine (Tang and Huang 1995;Leyva et al 2003;Zhang et al 2003;Zhou et al 2011). It was speculated that Cl − might exhibit different inhibitory effects on the oxidation rate of CPs with different substituent positions of chlorine on the phenyl ring.…”
