Selective In-migration and Income Convergence and Divergence across Belgian Municipalities

Abstract: In this paper, we present an empirical study of the relationship between aggregate migration and the income distribution across locations in a region. We use cross-sectional data on growth of per-capita taxable incomes, over the period 1991-2000, from the municipalities of the Belgian province of Limburg. We use a non-standard -convergence framework, built on the notion of 'weak absolute convergence', to test the hypothesis of selective income migration. The model we develop allows us to separate out observed … Show more

“…On one hand, migration appears to contribute to reducing regional disparities and fastening the speed of income convergence (see, e.g., Maza 2006 for Spain in the period 1995–2002 or Kirdar and Saracoglu 2008 for Turkey in the period 1975–2000). Moreover, migration may accelerate regional disparities and contribute to regional divergence (see, e.g., Peeters 2008 for Belgium in the period 1991–2000, Ostbye and Westerlund 2007 for Norway in the period 1980–2000; or Bunea 2011 for Romania in the period 2004–2008).…”

“…5 Peeters (2008) finds for Belgian municipalities that high income people (who are normally highly qualified) sort themselves into specific locations and seem to have a tendency to reside near people with similar income positions.…”
