Selective Partial Hydrogenation of Methyl Linoleate Using Highly Active Palladium Nanoparticles in Polyethylene Glycol

Abstract: Partial hydrogenation of carbon–carbon double bonds is among one of the approaches to improve the low oxidative stability of vegetable biodiesel, which is an important drawback in biodiesel technology. In the current work, we developed an efficient two-phase catalytic system utilizing Pd(OAc)2 dissolved in polyethylene glycol (PEG) that in situ generates palladium nanoparticles in order to promote a selective partial hydrogenation reaction of methyl linoleate into mono-hydrogenated compounds while avoiding th… Show more

“…Pd-catalyzed hydrogenation of different alkenes catalyzed by PdPEG4000-NPs. 179 Later on, the same authors have adapted the experimental conditions to the partial hydrogenation of sunflower oil derived fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). 180 The best conditions were the following ones: FAME/Pd = 2000, 80 °C, 20 bar H 2 , and 1500 rpm stirring speed.…”

“…The Pd content was found to be 0.409 mg/500 mg from PdNP@AT-Bentonite. It was expected that the large surface, high ion exchange capacity and adsorptive capacity made this support excellent for loading metallic ions [38,39].…”

“…The environment-friendly route that uses non-toxic solvents like water (green solvent guide) [33], reducing agents like biological extracts and stirring pathway or microwave assisted synthesis etc. is becoming ravishing [34][35][36][37][38][39]. The bio-chemicals in the leaves extract such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, propenyl polyols, terpenoids etc.…”

“…This procedure is a facile route to prepare supported PdNPs, which are materials of great interest in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Palladium is a metal employed in a series of catalyzed reactions, especially in fine and environmental chemistry, such as hydrogen generation from formic acid, 24 isomerization of allyl alcohol, 25 carbon-carbon coupling, 26 oxidation of alcohols and semihydrogenation of alkynes, 27 selective hydrogenation of alkenes 28,29 and nitroarene compounds. 30 The unique nature of palladium as a selective catalyst using extremely small amounts of this metal under mild conditions is one of the main reasons that attract researchers.…”
