Selenitetriglycerides—Redox-active agents

Abstract: The anticancer activity of Selol involves perturbation of the redox regulation in the androgen dependent hPCa (LNCaP) cells, but not in healthy cells. After Selol treatment, intracellular Eh has increased in tumors from -223 mV to -175 mV, while in serum it has decreased (-82 mV vs -113 mV). It shows significant changes Eh in the extra- and intracellular environment. The difference decreases from 141 mV to 62 mV. The changes suggest that a tumor cell was probably directed toward apoptosis. This is exemplified … Show more

“…Selenium is known to modify and regulate redox processes depending on the needs of an organism. The selenium in the selenium-enriched L. edodes mycelium exhibited a therapeutic effect; therefore, we can say that it is safe for use, despite its low therapeutic index [28,29]. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0233456.g001…”

“…Selenium and vitamin E are the most studied antioxidants for reducing the risk of PCa by modifying the intracellular redox state, as previously described in LNCaP cell lines treated with selenium ( 65 ). The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial is one of the largest and most important studies in the chemoprevention of PCa to date.…”

“…SelP binds heparin in a pH-dependent manner, which suggests its attraction to inflammation sites [ 33 ]. The primary source of plasma SelP is the liver, from where SelP is transported to peripheral tissues, including brain [ 54 , 55 ]. Its role in the CNS is unique, because brain tissue can take up tracer Se in a form of SelP and is unable to take up directly radioactive molecule 75 Se [ 52 ].…”
