“…Tan et al [6], in a recent extensive review, reported the different types of organic and inorganic Se species available. The inorganic form of Se is typically found in surface and ground water in a number of reported forms such as Se −2 (selinide), SeO 3 −2 (selenite), SeO 4 −2 (selenate), and Se 0 , which is the species nonsoluble form.…”

“…In order to meet the drinking water standards for Se in addition to treating industrial, mining wastewaters and agricultural run-offs, a varied number of treatment processes are reported in the open literature with various degrees of complexity and advancement. Comprehensive reviews conducted by Robberecht and Van Grieken [4] and Tan et al [6] offer an excellent overview of all current known treatments used for Se. It can be seen from the two recent reviews that although a great variety of biological [1214], chemical [1520], and physical treatments technologies [9, 21, 22] were developed in recent years, no single treatment offers a complete and cost effective scheme for treating Se from waste or drinking water.…”

“…14,19 Neste contexto, têm sido empregadas técnicas espectroscópicas, 20 técnicas cromatográficas 21 e técnicas eletroanalíticas. 22 Um detalhado levantamento bibliográfico mostrou que até 1970 houve a predominância no uso de técnicas eletroanalíticas, principalmente em função da simplicidade analítica e da possibilidade de especiação química.…”

“…8 If selenium oxyanions are left untreated in wastewater, selenium tends to bioaccumulate and poses a risk to the aquatic life in the receiving environment. 9,10 The presence of selenium in petrochemical wastewaters is due to its similar chemical behaviour to sulfur in the crude oil. Sulfur and selenium go through the refinery processes until separation takes place within the water strippers, where selenium remains mostly at the bottom of the strippers.…”
