Selenium Nanoparticle-Enriched and Potential Probiotic, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum S14 Strain, a Diet Supplement Beneficial for Rainbow Trout

Abstract: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), obtained from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) intestine, were cultured in MRS medium and probiotic candidates. Concurrently, producers of elemental selenium nanoparticles (Se0Nps) were selected. Probiotic candidates were subjected to morphological characterization and the following tests: antibacterial activity, antibiotic susceptibility, hemolytic activity, catalase, hydrophobicity, viability at low pH, and tolerance to bile salts. Two LAB strains (S4 and S14) satisfied the cha… Show more

“…Selenium-enriched probiotics can potentially be used in nanomedicines to treat in ammatory diseases, protect the organism from pathogens, and raise immune function [1,3]. Some strains of lactic acid bacteria are bioactive compounds and exert a probiotic activity [4,28]. The current study aimed to evaluate the anti-infectious effects of nano-selenium lactobacilli against STEC to suggest an anti-diarrhea bio-drug using a mouse intestinal infection model.…”

“…The functions of selenium are regulating metabolism, improving immunity, enriching reproductive appearance, stopping cancer, preventing free radicals, and avoiding some local epidemic diseases [2]. Se is added to human and animal diets to keep healthy in many countries [3,4]. Selenium Nanoparticles (SeNPs) lead to great antimicrobial properties and are less toxic than other metal nanoparticles in humans [5].…”

“…These improvements stand in clear contrast to the results observed in the control group, not only in rainbow trout but also in other salmonid species. The introduction of nanoprobiotic additives introduces a novel and promising avenue for enhancing the nutritional profile of fish species (Yanez‐Lemus et al., 2022).…”

“…Inflammatory cytokines are signaling molecules secreted by immune cells and certain other cell types, capable of promoting inflammation. 33 TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-18 are considered crucial factors for assessing the inflammatory status and inflammatory response in the mouse colon, as their overexpression is associated with inflammation. 34 TNF-α plays a critical role in the development of colitis in mice, and IL-1β is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that can promote inflammation and activation of immune cells.…”
