Selenosugars are key and urinary metabolites for selenium excretion within the required to low-toxic range

Abstract: Essential micronutrient selenium is excreted into the urine and͞or expired after being transformed to methylated metabolites. Monomethylated selenium is excreted into the urine in response to a supply within the required to low-toxic range, whereas tri-and dimethylated selenium increase with excessive supply at a toxic dose. Here we show that the major urinary selenium metabolite within the required to low-toxic range is a selenosugar. The structure of 1␤-methylseleno-N-acetyl-D-galactosamine was deduced from … Show more

“…However, Se is mainly excreted into urine under physiological conditions as selenosugar. 31,32 Although Te is a non-essential metalloid, it is expected to be metabolized in the same pathway as that of an excess amount of Se, an essential metalloid. Thus, This compound also acts as an immunomodulator, i.e., it inhibits the activation of interleukin-1β.…”

“…Currently, four selenosugars were identified in liver, serum and urine of quail [34], turtle [35], rat [36], porcine [37], and human [38], including methyl-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-1-seleno-β-D-galactopyranoside (selenosugar 1) [39,40], methyl-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-1-seleno-β-D-glucosopyranoside (selenosugar 2) [40], and methyl-2-amino-2-deoxy-1-seleno-β-D-galactopyranoside (selenosugar 3) [40] and selenosugar A [41]. In urine samples, selenosugar 1 is the major metabolite.…”

“…As a complementary technique to LC-ICP-MS, electrospray ionization (ESI) or atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)-mass spectrometry was used for the identification of unknown Se-containing metabolites in biological samples. [10][11][12][13][14][15] Since ESI is a softer technique than ICP, it can provide molecular information. 16 Hence, ICP-MS and ESI/APCI-MS are occasionally called inorganic and organic mass spectrometry, respectively.…”
