Self-Assembled Multilayer Structure and Enhanced Thermochromic Performance of Spinodally Decomposed TiO2–VO2 Thin Film

Abstract: Composite films of VO2-TiO2 were deposited on sapphire (11-20) substrate by cosputtering method. Self-assembled well-ordered multilayer structure with alternating Ti- and V-rich epitaxial thin layer was obtained by thermal annealing via a spinodal decomposition mechanism. The structured thermochromic films demonstrate superior optical modulation upon phase transition, with significantly reduced transition temperature. The results provide a facile and novel approach to fabricate smart structures with excellent … Show more

“…However, in most case, the reduced τ c by doping is always gained at the expense of lower T lum and smaller Δ T sol . To overcome this trade‐off, many methods including nano‐thermochromic, porous films, photonic crystals structure, biomimetic surface reconstruction, co‐doping, gridded structure, and multilayered antireflective overcoating are developed. Compared with other approaches, nanothermochromic (the oval line marked in Figure a,b), which is to mix VO 2 nanoparticles with a glass or polymer matrix, has the optimum performance from both experiment data and theoretical results .…”

“…With respect to our magnetron sputtering technique, the fast quenching from high temperature is not suitable since both the substrates and the thin films could easily fracture upon quenching. Therefore, to ensure the composition stability and uniformity of amorphous films, we first propose a two-step approach, namely, the room temperature sputtering-annealing (RTS-A) approach in our TVO system 29 , the schematic diagram of which is presented in Fig. S1.…”

“…4(c)). The change is reasonable because the perpendicular orientation of the microscopic structure causes incomplete coverage of the V-rich layers on the substrate thus increases the total transmittance for the higher transparent property of Ti-rich layer 29 , and lowers the thermochromic functional area. SD-M displays relatively high thermochromic performance with T lum of 32.3% at 20 °C, 35.9% at 90 °C, ΔT sol of 6.6%, and ΔT 2000   nm of 51.9%.…”

“…On the contrary, the material is a tetragonal structure (P4 2 / mnm,R), which is reflective for IR radiation [33,34]. This feature makes VO 2 an amazing material for thermochromic smart coatings [34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42].…”
