Self‐declared sensitive skin in China: a community‐based study in three top metropolises

Abstract: The prevalence of sensitive skin in the three cities of China is much lower than that in Europe and the United States. There was significant difference of the prevalence of sensitive skin among three cities located in different climatic and latitude regions and between men and women. The prevalence gradually decreased with the increasing age. The skin sensitivity was associated to the positive history of atopic dermatitis.

A previous study in France was performed in 2004 on 1006 people, a similar sample size to most studies.…”

“…Although the diagnosis of this condition is made by the patient itself, not by the physician, the assessment of sensitive skin is related to the declarations of the patient and this is why there are many studies on sensitive skin using surveys. The first epidemiological study of sensitive skin was conducted in the United Kingdom in 2001; then, studies were conducted in many countries throughout the world, including Belgium, China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United States of America, Brazil, Japan and Russia . All these studies used similar methodologies that were based on surveys of samples of the population aged 15 years and older but were not always performed in accordance with representative sampling; relevant information collected included gender, age, head of household's occupation, type of geographical area (metropolis, town, countryside) and region.…”

The number of Chinese that claimed sensitive skin (very or moderately) was 17.12% in Beijing but barely more than half that (9.10% ) in Shanghai, yet substantially more (22.39%) in Guangzhou [22].…”
