Self-efficacy, postoperative care satisfaction, body image and sexual functioning in ARM patients

Abstract: In ARM patients self-efficacy and parents self efficacy are correlated to important outcomes, respectively body image and sexual functioning in adults and postoperative care satisfaction in parents of those under 16 years old. Future longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate causal relations between the concepts considered.

“…Patients’ self‐efficacy in facing various problems and difficulties caused by ARMs was measured through an 11‐item self‐efficacy scale . An example of an item is: ‘How confident do you feel to overcome possible problems due to your physical condition at work or at school?’ Responses were rated on a 5‐point Likert‐type scale ranging from 1 (not capable) to 5 (completely capable).…”

“…Rintala and Pakarinen summarised the outcome of ARM beyond childhood and stressed the negative effects arising from genitourinary problems on QoL and the lack of sufficient data about the course of additional anomalies during adulthood . As a parent's organisation, Associazione Italiana per le Malformazioni Ano‐rettali (AIMAR) stressed the importance of the relationships among self‐efficacy, body image and sexual functioning in adult patients with ARM . In another survey, they found poorer QoL in adults compared with that in children because of poor emotional status, body image and physical symptoms .…”

“…Many studies have been published about quality of life (QoL) and its relationship to disease‐specific functioning in patients with ARM. These studies have been conducted by physicians, but ARM parent organisations have also been working on these issues . Although the tests used in these studies have varied, patients with ARM have been found to have poorer QoL than comparison groups .…”

“…Concurrent validity of SSCN was evaluated by testing relationships between the overall satisfaction score and two other theoretically related constructs: self-efficacy in managing chronic illness and overall quality of care. The hypothesized relationship between satisfaction and self-efficacy in managing chronic illness (Grano et al 2008) and overall quality of care is positive (de Witte et al 2006). Assessing internal consistency reliability included evaluating each dimension and the overall satisfaction score using Cronbach's alpha.…”
