Self-healing antimicrobial polymer coating with efficacy in the presence of organic matter

Abstract: 13A method to prepare a self-healing, antimicrobial polymer coating that retains efficacy against 14Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the presence of organic matter is reported. A coating composed of 15 branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) and styrene maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) was applied 16 to a maleic anhydride functionalized polypropylene support. The chemistry of the polymer 17 coating was designed to impart hydrophobicity due to the styrene subunits, intrinsic 18 antimicrobial character (>99.9% reduction) fr… Show more

“…Some recent publications regarding the creation of rechargeable antibacterial N ‐halamine surfaces are summarized in Table 6. The polymer films are often created utilizing layer‐by‐layer assembly processes and have been shown to be particularly effective when created by alternating layers of chlorine‐containing polymers with layers of cationic polymers such as those discussed above (Bastarrachea & Goddard, 2015, 2016). With a complicated synthesis process, polymer coatings prepared in this way are likely difficult or expensive to create, particularly when retrofitting existing equipment already in place.…”

“…However, the stability and antimicrobial efficacy of the coatings remain a significant challenge in the presence of organic matter . To solve this problem, Bastarrachea and Goddard prepared a healable, antimicrobial polymer coating composed of both N ‐halamine (styrene maleic anhydride copolymer, SMA) and cationic polymer (bPEI), and applied it to a maleic anhydride‐functionalized polypropylene support (PP‐ g ‐MA) . Briefly, bPEI and styrene maleic anhydride copolymer were sequentially applied on PP‐ g ‐MA, as shown in Figure , and the binding between the NH 2 of PEI and the maleic anhydride groups was evidenced by IR.…”
