Self-Organization in Semiconductor Lasers with Ultrashort Optical Feedback

Abstract: In this work, self-organization in semiconductor lasers with ultra-short optical feedback is investigated. Exploiting dc currents to tune the relevant feedback parameters, we have experimentally prepared and studied a number of novel nonlinear dynamical scenarios. Two different types of self-sustaining intensity-pulsations are detected depending on strength and phase of the feedback. One type of pulsations is emerging in a Hopf-bifurcation from relaxation oscillations. These oscillations become undamped due to … Show more

“…Time-delayed feedback has been widely used in optical systems both to study the intrinsic dynamics and to control the stabilization of, for instance, a laser device [30,31,32,33,34,35]. In these systems, the optical phase is an additional degree of freedom.…”

“…Mode beating can occur for the intersection of stable and unstable branches of the mode equation solutions. An investigation of the mode stability [86] shows that both modes stabilize each other in a small range of parameters. In this way, stable beating is achieved.…”

“…Consequently, external cavity semiconductor lasers would only allow for bit rates M s [5]. This limitation could be overcome by using much shorter feedback paths. In this letter, we consider the limit of ultrashort optical feedback [7] with delay times of only a few picoseconds. Ultrashort optical feedback can be achieved by integrating the feedback path into the semiconductor laser in the framework of a multisection structure [8].…”
