“…The difference in baseline nocturia frequency between the sites is likely related to demographic differences between the cohorts rather than measurement method. Lastly, the measure of bother from both cohorts was collapsed into a binary variable, “No to little bother” vs “Moderate to great/extreme bother.” This is a similar categorization to that described by Vaughan et al and independent of nocturia frequency. The subjectivity of the construct of bother may have been a study limitation, although it was collected using standardized metrics.…”

“…Current treatment strategies are typically focused exclusively on the lower urinary tract 25-27 , even though several reports suggest that older adults with nocturia are more likely to find nocturia to be clinical bothersome if it is complicated by poor sleep quality 28,29 . Wide-spread usage of available drug treatments for nocturia that target the lower urinary tract such as bladder relaxants, alpha blockers, or desmopressin are more often limited in older adults because of their potential for higher side effects 10 .…”

“…[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] For those individuals who report nocturia as bothersome there is even a stronger correlation with disturbed sleep. 13,16 As noted, to date, no study of the relationship between sleep and nocturia has used objective measurements of sleep, nor have previous studies examined the relationship between sleep and nocturia prospectively, on a night-to-night basis. Such data could enable the comparison of nights with or without nocturia in the same individual.…”
