Semantic Desktop 2.0: The Gnowsis Experience

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper we present lessons learned from building a Semantic Desktop system, the gnowsis beta. On desktop computers, semantic software has to provide stable services and has to reflect the personal view of the user. Our approach to ontologies, the Personal Information Model PIMO allows to create tagging services like del.icio.us on the desktop. A semantic wiki allows further annotations. Continuous evaluations of the system helped to improve it. These results were created in the EPOS research pr… Show more

“…We will also continue our work and the work of others [54,56] on mechanisms for defining, publishing, discovering, and composing desktop services so as to extend their current capabilities. We will also address research issues related to the minimization of the manual intervention that is required to build the semantically-rich network of information, including the automation of the classification, annotation, and discovery of data associations.…”

“…The Gnowsis semantic desktop project [54,56] aims to develop a semantic desktop environment that supports P2P data management based on desktop services. As in our framework, Gnowsis uses ontologies for expressing semantic associations and RDF for data modeling.…”

“…"Here I have the possibility to gather things" is a quote from a user of our prototype. Previous work published about Semantic Desktop applications [3,15,17] did show that this approach is promising to support users in filing and finding information, and to work with information in new ways. The challenge of our field is that evaluations with real end-users are scarce, and especially there exist no long-term study of Semantic Desktop usage.…”
