Semen quality and sperm functional parameters in fertile Indian men

Abstract: The reports of a decline in the reproductive health of men worldwide prompted the present study to be undertaken so that baseline semen parameters could be established in Indian men. Semen profile and sperm function parameters were evaluated in 368 Indian men of proven fertility, settled in Delhi. The results of the study were compared with available published information from Indian men. The mean sperm concentration and semen volumes were 68.22 +/- 15.14 x 10(6) ml(-1) and 3.20 +/- 0.94 ml, respectively. Rapi… Show more

“…In perspective to various fertile populations worldwide the mean progressive motility in Nepalese was found to be slightly higher than Swiss 14 as well as Norwegian population 13 and it made much closer resemblance with that of Indian population. 17 The mean progressive sperm motility of the current study is higher than that of Ombelet et al…”

“…Therefore, variations in physicality and thereby reproductive health status of men are most likely to occur among different regions of this country. Not many studies have been done to analyze such predictions (Jajoo & Kalyani, 2013;Marimuthu et al, 2003;Mukhopadhyay et al, 2010;Pal et al, 2006). However, a relevant study was conducted in laboratories at five different cities, namely, Bangalore, Kurnool, Mumbai, Jalandhar, and Jodhpur, using sperm samples from male partners of infertile couples.…”

“…Most of the Asian studies were carried out in China (Diao et al, 2013;Nie et al, 2012;;Tang et al, 2013;Tang et al, 2015;Wang et al, 1985) and India (Jajoo & Kalyani, 2013;Marimuthu et al, 2003;Mehta, Makwana, Ranga, Srinivasan, & Virk, 2006;Mukhopadhyay et al, 2010;Pal et al, 2006), and a few in Japan (Iwamoto et al, 2013), Israel (Benshushan et al, 1997;Homonnai et al, 1982;Laufer et al, 1985;Singer et al, 1990), and Saudi Arabia (el Shoura et al, 1995).…”

“…The sperm motility is a key factor to determine semen quality and its fertilizing capacity (104)(105)(106), which is widely controlled by a variety of factors (107)(108)(109). The phospholipid composition and cholesterol to phospholipid ratio are predominant factors required for the sperm maturation in the epididymis (110).…”
