SEMG activation patterns of thigh muscles during upright standing in haemophilic patients

Abstract: Although electromyography (EMG) is a common method to evaluate muscle activity, studies utilizing EMG in haemophilic patients are rare. The haemophilic arthropathy, resulting in altered afferent information is expected to cause disturbed activation and inter-muscular coordination patterns in haemophilic subjects. The aim of this study was to determine differences of selected knee muscles between haemophilic patients and non-haemophilic subjects during upright standing. Surface EMG (SEMG) amplitudes of rectus f… Show more

“…Besides, we noted a large dispersion of score values in our cohort of PWH that was also consistent in all age‐related subgroups. Other investigations have also shown such pronounced dispersions . Surprisingly, except for the subgroups between the ages of 30 and 39 years, we could not detect statistical differences for the knee status among the age‐matched subgroups.…”

“…Some research on this topic has been done in children as well as in adult PwH in recent years . For example, Gallach et al studied the centre of pressure displacement during bilateral and unilateral stances using a Kistler force platform for each 25 adult PwH with and without knee and/or ankle joint arthropathies compared to 25 controls without a bleeding disorder .…”

“…Raw SEMG data were processed offline using custom-made algorithms in MATLAB (The MathWorks, Natick, Mass., USA). After correcting the trend and removing 50 Hz and odd-numbered harmonics of the signals, filters with a band-pass of 20-400 Hz were applied [26]. Electrical activity was calculated with a moving root mean square (RMS) window of 0.2 s (i.e.…”
