Semibatch monomer addition as a general method to tune and enhance the mechanics of polymer networks via loop-defect control

Abstract: Controlling the molecular structure of amorphous cross-linked polymeric materials is a longstanding challenge. Herein, we disclose a general strategy for precise tuning of loop defects in covalent polymer gel networks. This "loop control" is achieved through a simple semibatch monomer addition protocol that can be applied to a broad range of network-forming reactions. By controlling loop defects, we demonstrate that with the same set of material precursors it is possible to tune and in several cases substantia… Show more

“…NDS, on the other hand, enables quantification of specific topological features of chemically labelled polymer networks via network degradation and analysis of the degradation products . NDS has been used to quantify the dependence of primary and secondary loop fractions in end‐linked as well as vulcanized networks on precursor concentration, with excellent agreement between experimental data and simulations …”

“…A common strategy to control the structure of all types of polymer networks incorporates network precursors with preexisting topological features such as a defined branch functionality and/or a unique molecular architecture. Recently, methods that bias polymerization kinetics, such as semibatch monomer addition and templated synthesis, have also been used to manipulate polymer network topology.…”
