Semiconductor optical amplifiers: recent advances and applications

Abstract: Owing to advances in fabrication technology and device design, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are evolving as a promising candidate for future optical coherent communication links. This review article focuses on the fundamentals and broad applications of SOAs, specifically for optical channels with advanced modulation formats, as an integrable broadband amplifier in commercial transponders and as a nonlinear medium for optical signal processing. We discuss the basic … Show more

“…Below that power, a high impact of the seed on the output power is visible, while above the slope remains almost constant with the seed power. To saturate the amplifier results in a high efficiency for the stimulated emission, reducing the spontaneous emission and improving the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) [8].…”

“…Parametric amplifiers serve to minimise the noise and thus improve the reach of data in advanced modulation formats. Our group has demonstrated the potential of using Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOA) for coherent communication, especially useful in the context of ultra-wideband amplification [26]. Figure 2 shows the results for 16/64 QAM when SOA is used as inline amplifier in coherent communication link.…”

“…Figure 2 shows the results for 16/64 QAM when SOA is used as inline amplifier in coherent communication link. The distortions incurred while amplification are mitigated by employing a strong beam called holding beam (Hbeam) [26]. In addition, compact semiconductor optical amplifiers are also demonstrated to be used as spectral inverters for dispersion healing in the optical domain, which can in turn minimise the requirements on digital signal processing [27].…”

“…Most of the work completed so far on all-optical signal regeneration has exploited the nonlinear properties of optical fibers [ 178 , 179 ] or semiconductor optical amplifiers (OAS) [ 180 , 181 , 182 ]. Figure 14 shows the experimental setup for characterization of a polarization-independent differential phase shift keying (DPSK) regenerative wavelength converter [ 181 ].…”
