Semivisible Jets: Dark Matter Undercover at the LHC

Abstract: The dark matter may be a composite particle that is accessible via a weakly coupled portal. If these hidden-sector states are produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), they would undergo a QCD-like shower. This would result in a spray of stable invisible dark matter along with unstable states that decay back to the Standard Model. Such "semi-visible" jets arise, for example, when their production and decay are driven by a leptophobic Z resonance; the resulting signature is characterized by significant missi… Show more

“…Before to go on, we mention that other scenarios with a strongly coupled hidden sector that may lead to LHC signals somewhat analogous to trackless jets have been proposed recently, see [21,22]. If necessary, those may provide a further motivation for the kind of experimental study we discuss in the following sections.…”

“…Third, there has recently been an increasing amount of work dedicated to discovering jets of dark hadrons, or so called dark jets. From a theoretical point of view, this includes emerging jets [16], semivisible jets [17] and softbombs [18]. From an experimental point of view, collider searches have been performed in Ref.…”

“…Generically, both stable and unstable dark pions can be produced in a parton shower. Assuming the unstable pions decay hadronically, this will result in the production of semivisible jets [17,59,60]. These roughly look like generic jets, but are accompanied by collinear stable particles that escape the detector and contribute to the missing transverse energy (MET).…”
