The south and southeast coast of southern Africa (from 28°S to 33°S) forms a highelevated transform passive margin bounded to the east by the Agulhas-Falkland Fracture Zone (AFFZ). We analysed the stratigraphic record of the Outeniqua and Durban (Thekwini) Basins, located on the African side of the AFFZ, to determine the evolution of these margins from the rifting stage to present-day. The goal was to reconstruct the strike-slip evolution of the Agulhas Margin and the uplift of the inland high-elevation South African Plateau. The Agulhas transform passive margin results from four successive stages: (1) Rifting stage, from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous (~200?-134 Ma), punctuated by three successive rifting episodes related to the Gondwana breakup; (2) Wrench stage (134-131 Ma), evidenced by strike-and dip-slip deformations increasing toward the AFFZ; (3) Active transform margin stage (131-92 Ma), during which the Falkland/Malvinas Plateau drifts away along the AFFZ, with an uplift of the northeastern part of the Outeniqua Basin progressively migrating toward the west; (4) Thermal subsidence stage (92-0 Ma), marked by a major change in the configuration of the margin (onset of the shelf-break passive margin morphology). Two main periods of uplift were documented during the thermal subsidence stage of the Agulhas Margin: (1) a 92 Ma short-lived margin-scale uplift, followed by a second one at 76 Ma located along the Outeniqua Basin and; (2) a long-lasting uplift from 40 to 15 Ma limited to the Durban (Thekwini) Basin. This suggests that the South African Plateau is an old Upper Cretaceous relief (90-70 Ma) reactivated during Late Eocene to Early Miocene times (40-15 Ma).

In 2008, the author wrote an article on sex and eros (Scheffler 2008) without having read or even being aware of Le Roux's article.2.His friendship also reminds me of an adage expressed by Jürgen Moltmann at a meeting during his visit to South Africa in 1978: 'Besides the obligation for Christian brotherhood there exists fortunately also the privilege of Christian friendship'.In this article, Jurie Hendrik le Roux's contribution to the theological endeavour is explored. His wide interdisciplinary interest that bears fruit in various fields of his work proved (at least in his case) that the adage 'Jack of all trades and master of none' is invalid. His research in sociology, Church history and philosophy will be discussed in so far as it contributed to his main interest, Old Testament Studies. In what follows, I will therefore make some remarks on Le Roux's work on sociology, Church history, ancient Israelite historiography, research history and also on exegetical methodology, Pentateuchal studies, philosophy and hermeneutics. My method will be to indicate the links between these disciplines as facets of one huge theological endeavour.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article gives an overview of the theological contribution of the Old Testament scholar Jurie le Roux. Over many years, his work in the field of Old Testament Studies stretched into many other fields -as indicated in the article -such as sociology, Church history and philosophy.

White' poverty and 'white' privilege in selected Afrikaans novels for young adults. This article examines the representation of 'white' poverty in selected Afrikaans novels for young adults published between 1990 and 2014: Droomwa (1990) by Barrie Hough, Die optog van die aftjoppers (1994) by George Weideman, Vaselinetjie (2004) by Anoeschka von Meck, Roepman (2004) by Jan van Tonder, Lien se lankstaanskoene (2008) by Derick van der Walt and Iewers vlieg daar fairy dust (2014) by Marisa Haasbroek.In these novels, poverty functions as a feature of the so-called problem book and coming of age novel. The novels are analysed, however, by employing critical whiteness studies as an overarching theoretical framework. Indicators of the 'white' characters' poverty are identified with regard to description, dialogue, actions and place with the aim of determining how and why these representations are evident in the novels. Apartheid is the backdrop for two of the novels; here, 'white' poverty is portrayed in a nostalgic manner. In the other novels, 'white' poverty is portrayed as irreconcilable with 'whiteness'; 'white' privilege prevails.
