Senile Tremor

Abstract: Background/Setting: It is well recognized that mild tremor is common among older adults, but the prevalence and clinical characteristics of this tremor have not been studied in detail. Objectives: To examine a cohort of normal older adults to: (1) ascertain the prevalence of mild test-detectible tremor; (2) quantify the severity and functional impact of this tremor, and (3) determine whether age, gender and concomitant illness predict the severity of tremor. Participants: 76 normal older adults >55 years of ag… Show more

“…Indeed, prevalence estimates vary 2,750 fold (8 to 22,000 cases per 100,000 population) among 20 studies. 34 Similarly, “mildly abnormal tremor resembling mild ET” 35 or any “signs of tremor” 36 are documented in unselected ostensibly normal individuals with a mean of 74 36 to 76 years. 35 Thus, the cutoff between “senile” and ET tremor is poorly defined, suggesting either a substantial phenotypic heterogeneity in ET or a variety of disorders that exhibit tremor as one of their features.…”

“…Tremor is a condition that is highly prevalent in human populations, particularly among the elderly (Louis et al, 1998, 2000; Lieberman et al, 1994). Among adults, tremor is associated with exposure to several environmental chemicals, including lead (Louis et al, 2003; Dogu et al, 2007), pesticides (Louis et al, 2006; Jiménez-Jiménez et al, 2007) and harmane, a beta-carboline alkaloid found in coffee, tobacco smoke, and animal protein (Louis et al, 2002).…”

“…13 The focus of tremor research has almost exclusively been on adult populations. Curiously, there have been virtually no surveys of the prevalence, clinical features or correlates of tremor among children.…”
