Sensing as a service: A cloud computing system for mobile phone sensing

Abstract: Sensors on (or attached to) mobile phones can enable attractive sensing applications in different domains such as environmental monitoring, social networking, healthcare, etc. We introduce a new concept, Sensing-as-a-Service (S 2 aaS), i.e., providing sensing services using mobile phones via a cloud computing system. An S 2 aaS cloud should meet the following requirements: 1) It must be able to support various mobile phone sensing applications on different smartphone platforms.2) It must be energy-efficient. 3… Show more

“…Ref. [11] discusses potential incentive methods for accomplishing this. A step-change is required both in terms of automating data capture (either through augmenting the current sensor suite of a mobile phone, or finding ways to more cleverly turn data captured through existing sensors into useful information), and in engaging participants, such that they are willing and able to use their personal devices in this way.…”

“…In this vein, the new concept of mobile sensing as a service (S2aaS) has been introduced [82]. While this concept was proposed and implemented as a standalone application, to aid in data collection about users and their surrounding environment, nevertheless, The principles of exploiting sensing capabilities, of a smartphone to collect data could be attached to the advertising platform.…”

“…Usually, a SaaS cloud works as follows. When a cloud user initiates sensing requests through a Web front-end from either mobile phone or a computer, the request will be forwarded to a sensing server which will then push the request to a subset of mobile phones that happen to be in the area of interest [15]. Such mobile devices will fulfill the corresponding sensing task.…”
